At Kurri Kurri High School, the Mathematics Faculty is committed to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of mathematics in every student. We believe that mathematical skills are not only essential for academic success, but also for everyday problem solving, critical thinking, and informed decision making in the wider world.

Our team of passionate and experienced teachers delivers a dynamic curriculum that balances foundational skills with real world application. Through engaging lessons, collaborative tasks, and innovative use of technology, we aim to inspire confidence, curiosity, and a growth mindset in all learners.

We support students at all levels — from those building confidence in core numeracy skills to those seeking extension and enrichment opportunities.

Courses

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

STAGE 4: Year 7 & Year 8

• Year 7 and Year 8 students follow the NSW Mathematics Syllabus and complete all mandatory content across the two years of Stage 4.
• In stage 4 students are focused on core mathematical skills and techniques and building their understanding and fluency across all strands of the mathematics curriculum.

STAGE 5: Year 9 & Year 10

• Year 9 and Year 10 students follow either a CORE or PATH pattern of study.
• The CORE pattern of study meets all minimum NESA requirements for Stage 5, but also includes some additional PATH topics chosen specifically to prepare all students for the study of Mathematics Standard in Year 11 and 12.
• The PATH pattern of study includes a greater selection of optional topics and student in this pattern of study will spend most of their curriculum time focused on these more challenging topics. The PATH pattern of study will prepare students to undertake Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 in Stage 6.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional.

STAGE 6: Year 11 & Year 12

·  Mathematics Extension 1
An advanced course for students with a strong interest and aptitude in mathematics, focusing on complex concepts in algebra, calculus, and proof to prepare for further study in STEM fields. Eligible for ATAR.

·  Mathematics Advanced
A rigorous course that develops deep mathematical understanding and skills in areas such as functions, calculus, and statistical analysis, suitable for students planning university study in a range of STEM related disciplines. Eligible for ATAR.

·  Mathematics Standard 2
A practical course focusing on mathematical skills for life, work, and further education, covering topics like financial maths, measurement, and data analysis. Also suitable for students planning university study across a range of fields. Eligible for ATAR.

·  Mathematics Standard 1
Designed for students aiming to meet the minimum numeracy requirement for the HSC and develop essential maths skills for employment and everyday life. Eligible for ATAR.

·  Numeracy (Content Endorsed Course - CEC)
A highly practical course that supports students in building confidence with everyday numeracy, focusing on real life applications such as budgeting, time management, and interpreting information. Not eligible for ATAR.

Equipment:

All students must have a NESA approved scientific calculator and we ask that they bring this to all maths lessons.
Casio FX82AU PLUS II (2nd Edition) is our recommended calculator and can be purchased at the front office.
